Aquatic insects as indicators of environmental quality
Cal R. Fremling
Article by William T. Mason, Calvin R. Fremling, and Alan V. Nebeker regarding aquatic insects (including mayflies) as biological indicators of a body of water's health and quality. Authors credited respectively: National Biological Service, Winona State University, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Introduction: "Aquatic insects are among the most prolific animals on earth, but are highly specialized and represent less than 1% of the total animal diversity (Pennak 1978). Most people know the 12 orders and about 11,000 species of North American aquatic insects (Merritt and Cummins 1984) only by the large adults that fly around or near wetlands. Aquatic insects are excellent overall indicators of both recent and long-term environmental conditions (Patrick and Palavage 1994). The immature stages of aquatic insects have short life cycles, often several generations a year, and remain in the general area of propagation. Thus, when environmental changes occur, the species must endure the disturbance, adapt quickly, or die and be replaced by more tolerant species. These changes often result in an overabundance of a few tolerant species, and the communities become destabilized or "unbalanced." Urban Stormwater Quality: summary of contaminant data
Cal R. Fremling
An article regarding storm water and its contribution to contaminants in bodies of water, filed for reference to Lake Winona. Abstract: "Storm water quality can have a significant impact on receiving water bodies. Two of the major impacts can be to aquatic life in the receiving water body and downstream water users that might use the water as a raw water source for drinking water. With increased understanding of the importance of drinking water quality to public health and the recognition that protecting raw water sources is an integral component of the water treatment process, there is a greater need to identify possible contaminants found in storm water that impact the receiving water quality. Presented is a literature review to identify and quantify contaminant data available on storm water. The article focuses on work that presented specific chemical, physical, and biological parameters rather than the traditionally used overall water quality parameters, such as biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids. To assess impacts and to put into perspective the importance of the reported concentrations, values were compared with pertinent guidelines, regulations, and levels that have been reported to cause possible adverse impacts." Originally published in Critical Reviews in environmental Science and Technology, volume 25, number 2, 1995. Folder titled "Lake Winona - Storm H2O." 47 pages. Part of the Cal R. Fremling Collection.

1991 LCMR funding proposal
Cal R. Fremling
Proposal request submitted by Calvin R. Fremling and Neal D. Mundahl regarding a joint restoration project between WSU and the City fo Winona for Lake Winona. Created for submission to the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources in 1991. Program title: A Cooperative Project Between Winona State University and the City of Winona to Restore Lake Winona Wetlands Dominated by the Noxious Exotic Weed, Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). From the narrative: "This project proposes to restore two city-owned wetlands adjacent to Lake Winona within the City of Winona. The proposed restoration will: 1) suppress the noxious exotic weed, purple loosestrife, now dominating the areas, 2) establish the wetlands as areas for environmental interpretation and education, 3) provide improved habitat for native wetland biota, and 4) filter stormwater runoff to reduce nutrient loading into the lake. The project will be a cooperative effort involving Winona State University faculty (pre-restoration planning, environmental studies, interpretive planning) and students (environmental studies, class projects), the City of Winona (engineering, construction), the Lake Winona Committee (overlook construction), and area citizens (revegetation, volunteer efforts)." 8 pages.
