The Cal Fremling Photographs collection includes several hundred photographs and negatives which were used for educational and professional purposes. The subjects of the photographs and negatives aerial photographs include aerial images of the Upper Mississippi River, Lake Winona, Winona and neighboring townships in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and various flora and fauna specimens.
Requests to reproduce the items in this collection, for educational purposes only, are granted by the Winona County Historical Society. Please contact curator@winonahistory.org for more information.

Immortal River photograph extras

34 black and white photographs and drawings in an envelope labeled "Immortal River, Chapter 13 (?) Extras," in reference to Cal Fremling's book about the Mississippi River. Part of the Cal R. Fremling collection. Items are photographic prints created from historical photographs and displays created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (St. Paul district), and other unknown photographers. Also included are four cross-section drawings showing "the evolution of the Mississippi River Valley at Winona" as one example of geologic and river development in the driftless ("unglaciated") region, used as figures on pages 66-67 of Immortal River. Other image subjects include: barge construction and traffic, wing dams, maps, riverboats, plants and wildlife, Fountain City, river maintenance, industry, historical river workers. Some prints dated and attributed. Reprint dates are unknown. Exact locations pictured unknown unless specified. Print sizes are mostly 8"x10" with some smaller (5"x10" , 7"x9").
