Abstract
This thesis explores the Princess Wenonah legend and its permutations. From 1805 to the present, the published versions of the legend-dependent on the imaginations, literary tastes, individual whims, and beliefs of their authors-vary in detail and purpose. The more than thirty versions of the legend share some common denominators, but their variations add color to local history and reflect some of the important cultural changes that have occurred over the course of almost two centuries.
