    Description

Photo of four men (Charles Williams, Robert Foreman, George Baihly, Elmer Greden) participating in a laboratory experiment during a Fundamentals of Radio (Part II) class.  The class was part of a Radio Technicians Course directed by Dr. Nels Minne under the auspices of the University of Minnesota.  The tuition-free 16-week night course was not open to Winona college students; instead, it was for male and female college graduates and qualified high school graduates who could be quickly trained for radio work in industry and the armed forces. This nationwide Engineering, Science, and Management War Training (ESMWT) program was administered by the U.S. Office of Education from 1940 to 1945.  The course in Winona began in 1942. Williams and Foreman had enlisted in the Army Signal Corps Reserve, and it was expected that most of the students would serve in the military in some capacity. For more information, see Winona Republican-Herald, "Radio Operation Night School at T. C. Scheduled," 12 February 1942; Winona Republican-Herald, "Radio Technicians Work at T. C.," 15 June 1943, which includes a similar photo; and the records of the U.S. Office of Education, Engineering, Science, and Management War Training, 1940-1945, Record Group 12, National Archives, archives.gov.
