Abstract
Schools have never processed, stored, and protected more student, faculty, staff, and stakeholder data, leading to a rise in big data analytics in the field of education. However, along with implications for data use and governance, there are practical implications of the cybersecurity of that data, including whether educational organizations possess equitable human, financial, and technological resources to ensure the cybersecurity of their websites, through which countless transfers of data occur every second. As a result, this strategic brief distills the NIST Computer Security Resource Center glossary from 9,787 terms (NIST, 2024a) to the 17 most critical terms for educational practitioners to comprehend in order to better understand the concept of cybersecurity and how it may impact their everyday work.
