Final Manuscript Preparation Guidelines for Essays in Education
This page provides the essentials for formatting submissions to Essays in Education.
Essentials
- Do not include a title page, abstract, or page numbers. These will be added by the editors.
- Language: English. Consider using a copy editor (English major) or grammar software to fine tune your writing.
- Formatting: submit only one document (including tables, figures, appendices, etc.)
- File Format: Word, RTF, or PDF
- Page Size: 8.5 x 11-inches
- Margins: 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) on all sides, including tables and figures
- Font: 12 point, Times (Times New Roman), black (color may be use used sparingly in figures and tables)
- Spacing: single space, do not add an extra line between paragraphs
- Length: 6 single-spaced pages preferred (excluding title page, reference pages, and appendices)
- Justification: left justified (one column format)
- Indention: consistently indent all paragraphs 2 to 5 spaces
- Formatting dilemmas: refer to APA 7th Edition
- Spelling: common dictionary English, author’s regional norms are accepted, italicize foreign words
- Tables and figures: are to be labeled and appear near where they are referenced in the text. Large tables or figures should be put on pages by themselves. Avoid the use of small font sizes (less than 10-point). All tables and figures must fit within the margins on all sides.
- Headings: (e.g., start of sections) should be distinguished from the main body text by their font or by using small caps. Use the same font face for all headings and indicate the hierarchy by reducing the font size. There should be a space above and below headings.
- References: it is the author's obligation to cite all material obtained from other sources. Provide complete references. References should appear at the end of the document, beginning on the last text page if possible. Single space with a hanging indent in alphabetical order. See APA 7th Edition for specific concerns.
- Footnotes: appear at the bottom of the page on which they are referenced. Footnotes should be in 10 pt. Times and single spaced. Use a footnote separator rule (line) above the footnote. Footnote numbers or symbols follow the text, rather than precede punctuation.
