In a world increasingly characterized by polarization and division, the need for meaningful dialogue and empathetic engagement is more urgent than ever. This compelling collection of essays, selected from doctoral students of the 2024 Winona State University’s Education Doctoral Program Residency, explores how education can respond to these challenges. The authors critically assess the current state of public discourse and propose ways that schools can serve as spaces for constructive, civil engagement. They examine the broader responsibilities of educators in bridging divides, fostering a culture of empathy, and listening. Through their reflections, these aspiring scholars encourage us to reconsider the role that schools, teachers, and educational leaders play in shaping an inclusive, connected, and humanizing future.

The 2024 Education Doctoral Program Residency book was edited by Rebecca R. Simataa and Steve M. Baule.

"As practitioners in education and adjacent fields embark upon their journeys toward earning a doctorate, they soon realize the importance of this collection’s theme: the intersection of purpose, empowerment, and persistence (PEP). These concepts prove critical to a student’s success at all stages of the doctoral process, from program admission, to topic exploration, to graduation. The essays in this collection explore how students define, identify, and leverage “PEP” as novice researchers and as emerging practitioner-scholars who are preparing to re-enter the workforce with new skills, knowledge, and an evolved sense of agency." - A. Brooke Boulton

"It all comes down to this: we have an amazing team of faculty working with us who are present, supportive, intelligent, and motivated to help us succeed. They designed this program with those objectives in mind. We are in good hands, and any questions we have will be answered, so long as we ask them. Having the support system of our faculty, along with the tools we need to be successful, are major parts of the battle, already won. The rest is up to us." - A. Brooke Boulton
