Description
The Winona Normal School graduating class of 1911 selected as the Senior play, "Wenonah: An Indian Idyl" written by Christine H. Boyson, class of 1906. The structure and brief description of the play are printed in the 1911 yearbook (page 33). Agatha C. Christine graduated in 1911.
The play depicts the interactions between the early missionaries, French explorers, and the native peoples of this land. It also includes the colonizer's interpretations of the culture of the native peoples. The play ends with the myth of Wenonah at Maiden Rock. To date, no documentation of the play, other than in the 1911 yearbook, has been located.
The Dakota Oyate (Nation) includes four bands: Mdewakanton, Sissetonwan, Wahpetonwan, and Wahpekute. Within the boundaries of the state of Minnesota, there are four Dakota communities: Prairie Island Indian Community, the Shakopee Sioux Community, the Lower Sioux Indian Community, and the Pezihutazizi/Oyate (Upper Sioux Community).
