Guest Artist Residency: Jon Irabagon
Jon Irabagon
This jazz concert was performed in the Vivian Fusillo Main Stage Theatre on March 14, 2024, by saxophonist Jon Irabagon, with Josh Shively, Larry Prince, and Eric Graham. This performance includes original compositions by Irabagon, a Filipino-American saxophonist with several awards, including being named one of New York City's 25 Jazz Icons by Time Out New York. As a member of and advocate for minority communities, his musical works involve open dialogue with his co-performers to promote communication and understanding.

This recital was performed in the WSU Recital Hall on February 6, 2024 by Eric Brisson (piano) performing music from the Classical and Romantic Eras, as well as the 20th century. One highlight included Alexina Louie’s Scenes from a Jade Terrace no.2: “Memories in an Ancient Garden” that required Dr. Brisson to play directly on the strings of the piano.

This performance featured songs from the three different sets of music: La Bonne Chanson, Op. 61 by Gabriel Fauré, The Prairie Sings by Philip Wharton, and Canciones Clásicas Españolas, Vol. 1 by Fernando Obradors.

This NAfME (National Association for Music Education) Music Faculty Recital was performed in the WSU Recital Hall on September 9, 2023, featuring faculty members of the Department of Music, and was organized by NAfME’s student volunteers. The purpose of this event was to showcase the talents of the department’s faculty and raise money (through donations at the door) for NafME.

This concert was performed in the WSU Recital Hall on September 20, 2023 by The Paper Clips Trombone Quartet. This quartet includes Ben Bussey, Lauren Husting, Chris Allen, and Brooklyn Audette. From the ensemble’s website: “The Paper Clips are a trombone quartet founded in 2019 and based in Minneapolis, MN. We are dedicated to connecting the threads of classical & contemporary music, bringing the best of American popular music to audiences of all ages.” The WSU performance featured music from the 20th and 21st centuries, “weaving together the trombone’s journey through music history with the enduring legacy of the Motown Records label on American popular music.”

This concert was performed in the Vivian Fusillo Main Stage Theatre on September 12, 2023 by Dave Marck (piano), Greg Balfany (saxophone), Karyn Quinn (bass), and Rich MacDonald (drums). The title of the program was Over the Rainbow: Celebrating the Music of Harold Arlen, featuring music by Harold Arlen, who may be best known for his song “Over the Rainbow” from 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
