Description

Fremling's field notebook for 1958 includes original notes, drawings, and tables with later annotations (1958, etc). Main notes are from April 19-Sept 2, followed by out-of-sequence notes from March 6 and December 6, and a loose note dated April 11, 1959. Pages of main notes are numbered 1-169. Written and drawn mostly in black ink (later annotations mostly in red ink, pencil) with few notes in pencil. Several notes are in different hands, but different authors are not noted. Subjects cover the study of emergence periods of mayflies (including Hexagenia rigida, H. bilineata) caddisflies (including Cheumatopsyche campyla and Hydropsyche orris), and genus Potamyia (mostly P. flava). Includes descriptions of eggs, larvae, pupa. Notes also include descriptions of: emergence traps constructed to take samples of flies, sampling plates, species counts, DDT pesticide/insecticide tests, ethanol tests and experiments, anecdotes from lockmasters and river boat captains, weather and temperatures, and winter testing.
