It is uncertain which Salix species was collected; therefore, its native status is unknown. Taxonomy - Order: Salicales; Family: Salicaceae; Genus: Salix.; Species: Unknown. Collected from "marshy places" in Winona, Winona County, Minnesota, on May 22 and May 31, 1899. "Pistillate" and "staminate" refer to the female and male flower parts on the catkins. This botanical specimen was collected and included in Helen J. Monahan's final project for a Botany course in 1899 taught by John M. Holzinger at the Winona Normal School in Winona, Minnesota. It was included in a collection of sixty-seven specimens which can be viewed in the Botanical Specimen Book collection in OpenRiver.
