Effect of Rain and Habitat on Bat Calling Activity in Winona

Presenter(s)

Abstract

Bats are an important member of a healthy ecosystem; however, we know very little about bat activity in the southeastern MN region. We used echolocation data to see whether bat calling activity differed between upland habitat at Garvin Heights and Lake Winona. We also tested whether time of night and precipitation events affected bat call activity. There was significantly more bat calling activity at Lake Winona compared to Garvin Heights. Rain events caused a reduction in bat calls at both sites. There was no clear pattern of bat call activity throughout the night. This study highlights the impact of environmental factors, such as precipitation and habitat, on bat calling activity.
